OSHIMA
Oshima
Oshima is entirely the National Sanatorium Oshima Seishoen for Hansen's disease. Due to long-standing social prejudice and discrimination against Hansen's disease, residents were forcibly isolated by the government's misguided policies.
In recent years, the island has been conducting awareness activities to correctly understand Hansen's disease, with art serving as one of the bridges, including the Setouchi Triennale.
Efforts continue to raise awareness of this place and its history, and now thousands of tourists visit the island.
